The simple thoughts

Do we need a third party?
Back to Full Blog

Hello to all today:

Politics, Politics, Politics. Yes, I know that all of my recent posts have centered around this subject, but I feel like that our political atmosphere needs to be addressed. It seems like so many Americans want to complain about the issues in politics but have no interest in actually discussing the system itself. So I am going to attempt to do just that.

Our political system is divided, and at one time it was believed that the majority of people fell to the right. Those on the left were college professors and minorities. Recently, from talking to local school students (those interested), and some of my friends outside of school I see a split in ideals, and how one views the political system. This post comes from the conversation I had with my father a few nights ago.

We have two main systems...Republicans and Democrats. However, if I am not mistaken there are a few Independents in the Senate and maybe one or two in Congress. But the majority of representatives are of the previous two. In America we have had numerous political fronts (the Whigs, the Know-nothings, etc.).

In today's world it would be a benefit for a party to arise out of the overwhelming split in these two main parties. The majority of American's do not vote. They choose not to vote for various reasons: they don't think that their vote will matter, they do not see a candidate that they are willing to actually vote for, but mainly they don't agree with much of a candidates beliefs.

My question is if there is a majority of people who do not vote for these reasons then why is there not a party to represent these people? I used to think if a party came up it would split the Dem. party and eventually make the Rep. stronger. (I think this because the Rep. are a religious party and usually vote on morale issues...which in turn makes them stronger, not to mention most voters are older in age, thus they are loyal to a party due to years of support)

My Dad wants to see a third party emerge. He said it would bring back the democracy and actually challenge politicians to campaign again instead of slandering the opponent. I think there may be some merit to this.

What do you think would happen if there was a strong third party? Who do you think it would effect the most? Do you think it would encourage more people to vote?

Well I have a power-point presentation to complete so I hope I will have more time to address this later.

Thanks for stopping in today:
Nik

Yes we do. Dems and republicans are akin to prostitutes. We need to fix the system and add the Truth Party.

I was thinking of The Keg Party, with all the alcohol problems going on in congress, that should fit in perfectly. We'll have art walk in with a keg on his shoulders, and say LISTEN UP! Just because he's like E.F. Hutten when he talks, people listen.

I think that most people want something different. What we have is totally dysfunctional.

It is the greatest fear of the "political elite". If that were to happen it might actually bust the illusion of even our perceived "democracy".

It is my first time here, it won't be the last. You sound like a thinking human, my experience is that there aren't that many. You have probably already read, (I can't believe how many times I have seen it recommended in these pages) Howard Zinn," The People's History of the United States". I think it should be required reading.

Hey Miss Nikki! 8-)

Yeah I think that another party would help us realize that there is nothing coming out of the two parties that we do have. However, unfortunatly, another party could fall into the same disfunction that the republicans and democrats can.

What we need is a change in the human race itself. As long as man governs himself, I don't think anything can change. And since it is quite apprant that "god" isn't the one too govern us either (because if he is right now, he's made a mess of things) I really don't know what the answer is.

Nice to see you again Miss Nikki, and take care of yourself.

Hey there Adam

I think you are right on the fact we need changes within our system starting on the human level. But, I can't help but have faith that some good could come out of this entire mess...

...call me hopeful or a hopeless optimist.

Thanks for stopping in and it's nice to see you again!

Hi, nik,

I think it is time for a good cleansing of both of the major parties. It has been for quite some time.

I think the best thing we can do is to attempt to get independants in office on a local level, and work ourselves up from there.

peace, wayf

The time is definately right for a third party or even a fourth one but I doubt The Republicans or Democrats are ready! If we ever had a "no vote" choice on the ballot a lot of politicans would never get elected! Thanks for your note!

This is a great post...I believe we could use a third party to better serve the true needs of the people...the problem is in an election year that third parties take votes away from the party in oppisition...not from the party in power.

In our Governors race in Texas Parry will slide to a victory despite his very visible favoritism and graft. Strayhorn, Friedman and Bell (the Democrat) will split the votes against him. This is the same thing that happened to get Bush elected in the first place...with Nader as the 3rd party candidate.
